Low down payments and same-day coverage is available.

You may be paying too much for your current coverage. While there is nothing wrong with keeping the same company for an extended period, your prices may now be significantly higher than other available options. Take a moment of your time to fill in your zip code and see how much money you can save. You will not have to provide any personal financial information. Most carriers offer additional discounts when they cover your home, rental property, motorcycle, RV, or mobile home. By providing your zip code in the “Auto Insurance Quotes” box on the right side of the page, you can quickly view your best options.

Tips To Reduce Your Pennsylvania Car Insurance Rates

1. Consider insuring your home with the same company that handles your vehicles. A “multi-policy” discount will be available on BOTH policies. There also may be additional discounts if your life insurance (if available) is through the same carrier. Sometimes, disability, health, long-term care, condo, and renters coverage may also qualify for a discount. Depending on the carrier, the reduction can be as much as 20%. Additional savings may be offered if you renew the policies for three years or longer.

2. Price shop different companies at least once every 3-5 years. Sometimes the major carriers will reduce their premiums at the time you are comparison shopping. If the timing is right, you’ll save hundreds of dollars.  Additional discounts are sometimes offered every few years, so perhaps you’ll qualify for these new reductions. For example, newer vehicles are often equipped with standard safety devices that were not originally on previous models. Improved crash-test results may also help reduce your premium.

You may also benefit when rating territories are changed (similar to voting districts). This occurs when carriers adjust their zip code or county underwriting factors. Depending on where you live, it’s possible that a 5%-20% rate reduction can be applied.

3. Check your credit score on a regular basis and avoid “late pays.” Most companies provide better options to customers with superior credit. And several carriers will also charge a higher rate to persons with poor credit. You can order a free report every year so you know areas where you can improve. Naturally, paying off balances (in full) each month will improve your scores.

But it is important to make sure you are not paying for these reports. They should be free on an annual basis. If you are asked to pay a fee, simply leave that site. This site (annualcreditreport.com) appears to be a very trustworthy and safe website to use. Any emails you receive that ask you to “click on a link” for your free report, should be ignored.

4. Increase your collision deductibles. If you currently have a $100 or $250 deductible, raising them to $500 or $1,000 will have a major impact on your cost. Unless your accident frequency increases, the savings accumulated each year could be substantial. And as new car costs increase, so will your discount! If youthful drivers are on the policy, the savings will increase. Of course, the risk of having an at-fault accident also increases.

Remember to remove collision coverage from very old vehicles (See Top #5). However, fire and theft coverages can stay, regardless of the age of the car. This will help recover some of the losses associated with claims that were not your fault or were weather-related. Glass-breakage deductibles can also remain low (or at $0) since they don’t have a significant impact on your rate.

5. If your car is 10 years or older, it may be time to consider placing only liability coverage on the vehicle. Because the value has significantly dropped, the amount you would receive if the car is totaled may be far less than you expected. And, of course, each year, that value is reducing.

However, it is still important to keep your liability limits at (or above) the state required amount, which is $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident, along with $5,000 of property damage. These amounts are quite low and should periodically be increased.

If your vehicle is considered a “classic,” or you believe it will be a special collector edition, then special policy riders can help. These riders can provide coverage at a “stated value,” and reduce the overall cost. Special license plates may be required for vehicles that reach a certain age.

6. Special discounts are offered (by some carriers) to active or retired members of the Military or Reserves. Discounts vary, but typically are in the 10%-15% range. Membership in military organizations may also reduce your rates, along with membership in some business organizations. We can provide a list, if needed. There are quite a few opportunities and the list is updated every few years. For example VFW membership may qualify, depending on the company.

7. If you recently retired, joined a carpool, or reduced your annual commuting mileage, contact your Pa auto insurance company. There’s a good chance you’ll qualify for a discount on the car that is affected by these changes. Also, reaching age 55 will generate a reduction with many companies. Typically, the reduction is about 10%, since you will be driving less. Price breaks at 65 are popular, but discounts at age 75 are rare. If you have failing health and you are over age 70, a medical statement could cause you to be excluded from the policy. Therefore, never consider changing companies once you have reached age 75.

At ages 65 and 75, you may also see reductions. However, at age 85, you may see your rates go up, although any price hikes will not be major. You also may be required to answer questions regarding your overall health and eyesight. Any recent accidents or large claims will be closely monitored.

8. Ask about insurer-installed electronic devices that can potentially save you money. Progressive’s “Snapshot” program is one example. The device fits into your dashboard diagnostic port and monitors many driving habits such as how fast you drive, how quickly you stop, the time of day you are on the road, and many other items. It is completely optional and can be dismantled at any time. Only private automobiles qualify (not commercial).

Graduated Driver Licensing And Passenger Restraint Law

Regardless of which carrier you select, earlier legislation continues to help reduce your premiums. Youthful operators continue to be responsible for a large number of claims, which ultimately impacts the cost of everyone’s auto insurance. However, this legislation has increased the number of required training hours for teenagers, while limiting the number of passengers they carry. The Pa DMV provides additional resources and information that explains all past and current legislation. The PA DOI provides additional information on laws and requirements for all drivers.

The results have helped to keep prices affordable. The number of reported crashes among teen drivers has reduced by more than 40%, a direct result from the implementation of the program. Gaining this needed experience and skill has also saved many lives because of the reduction in accidents.

Some of the main provisions of the law include:

Increase from 50 to 65 the number of hours of training for new operators including nighttime driving and adverse road conditions.

Young new drivers can only have one passenger under age 18 who is not a member of the immediate family. After six months of clean driving, that number will increase to three.

An immediate citation will be given for failure to wear seat belts or have a passenger under age eight without seat restraints.
