Pennsylvania Health Insurance Reform

Pennsylvania health insurance reform is coming. But if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has her way, you can expect to see your Pennsylvania individual and family health insurance rates rise faster than you ever imagined. However, there are some alternative solutions that will cost less, expand coverage and improve health care quality.

Five health care reform ideas that should be implemented (courtesy of Douglas Holtz-Eakin and Paul Howard) are:

1.     Eliminate the tax exclusion for health care and replace it with a tax deduction or tax credit. Typical savings could be used to reduce the cost of individual health insurance policies.

2.     Increase and expand funding to high-risk pools so that major pre-existing conditions would be better covered.

3.     Let health insurance companies sell insurance across state lines. If Pennsylvania consumers do not want or need expensive “Cadillac” health plans with features they will never use, why force them to buy these plans?

4.     Eliminate waste, abuse and fraud in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Fraud schemes cheat taxpayers out of billions of dollars each year, including many in Pennsylvania. Let’s tackle this problem first before revamping the entire health care system.

5.     Enact tort reform that will end lawsuit abuse. This change would reduce the federal budget deficits by approximately $54 billion over the next 10 years.

As the owner and founder of Pahealthinsurancecoverage.com, Pennsylvania’s leading resource for affordable health care, I sincerely support health care reform. But let’s do it the right way.

Pennsylvania Cinergy Health Insurance… Is It Worth Buying?

Posted by Ed Harris | Insurance Info | Monday 25 May 2009 8:36 pm

Cinergy Health likes to advertise their health plans. They may not be on television as much as the ShamWow or OxiClean products, but Cinergy does heavily promote their medical plans in Pennsylvania.

So…Is  Cinergy Health insurance worth considering. Probably not…unless you’re uninsurable with major health problems. And be prepared for some surprises when you read the fine print of the policy.

The Cinergy Health “Preferred” plans are NOT major medical insurance and are not intended to replace catastrophic health insurance or major medical insurance. The dental and prescription coverages do NOT make payments directly to you. They are “discount” plans that may reduce your out-of-pocket costs with certain providers.

The Coverage

For example…the Cinergy Health “Preferred 1000”  plan pays only $100 per year (per person) of emergency room (ER) charges. Two ER visits could easily leave you with a bill of more than $2,000. Daily hospital confinement benefits are also limited to only $1,000 per day (up to 30 days per year). Hospital intensive care coverage is even less…just $1,000 per day (up to 15 days per year).

Pennsylvania Cinergy Health Plans offer far less coverage than most typical major medical plans offered by large insurers such as Blue Cross, United HealthCare, Aetna and HealthAmerica. The difference becomes quite noticeable with lengthy hospital stays.

The Cost

The Pennsylvania Cinergy Health “Preferred 1000” plan costs almost $6,000 for family coverage and about $3,700 for an individual. Add a $50 registration fee and it is quite apparent that unless you’re uninsurable, this plan may not be your best option. If you can qualify for health insurance from one of the major health carriers, that’s probably your best option.
