Cinergy Health likes to advertise their health plans. They may not be on television as much as the ShamWow or OxiClean products, but Cinergy does heavily promote their medical plans in Pennsylvania.
So…Is Cinergy Health insurance worth considering. Probably not…unless you’re uninsurable with major health problems. And be prepared for some surprises when you read the fine print of the policy.
The Cinergy Health “Preferred” plans are NOT major medical insurance and are not intended to replace catastrophic health insurance or major medical insurance. The dental and prescription coverages do NOT make payments directly to you. They are “discount” plans that may reduce your out-of-pocket costs with certain providers.
The Coverage
For example…the Cinergy Health “Preferred 1000”plan pays only $100 per year (per person) of emergency room (ER) charges. Two ER visits could easily leave you with a bill of more than $2,000. Daily hospital confinement benefits are also limited to only $1,000 per day (up to 30 days per year). Hospital intensive care coverage is even less…just $1,000 per day (up to 15 days per year).
Pennsylvania Cinergy Health Plans offer far less coverage than most typical major medical plans offered by large insurers such as Blue Cross, United HealthCare, Aetna and HealthAmerica. The difference becomes quite noticeable with lengthy hospital stays, expensive prescriptions or constant visits to a specialist. A major medical claim could potentially expose hundreds of thousands of dollars of expenses that are not covered or are only partially covered.
The Cost
The Pennsylvania Cinergy Health “Preferred 1000” plan costs almost $6,000 for family coverage and about $3,700 for an individual. Add a $50 registration fee and it is quite apparent that unless you’re uninsurable, this plan may not be your best option. In fairness, this article originally was published in 2009 so it’s possible that their rates and plan options may have changed.
But If you can qualify for health insurance from one of the major health carriers, that’s probably your best option. We feel that Aetna, UnitedHealthCare, HealthAmerica, Highmark, Keystone or any of the Blue Cross plans are better and more affordable Pennsylvania health insurance options. You can request a free quote from us and we’ll provide rate and benefit information from the state’s best health insurers.

This really confuses me, since the payment of $3,700 for an individual is a little too much in comparison to $6,000 for a family. I feel cheated, since I’m single and that’s a LOT of money!
I agree…it is a lot! Unless you’re uninsurable, there may be better alternatives.

Hi. I like your stuff. Keep giving us good info.
Very nice information. Thanks for this.

While some of your comments are accurate, you missed the fact that these plans also cover 100% of the members’ doctor visits up to $100 each (5 visits per year per person) , preventive care, labs, diagnostics and x-rays, 80% of surgeons’ charges, mental health, $5,000 of accident medical care, and many more benefits. All of this is offered without a deductible. By comparison if your readers select coverage from the carriers you recommended, they would most likely have an out-of-pocket deductible of $5,000 or more in order to get a comparable premium. Additionally, as you indicated, too many Americans are uninsurable. What would you recommend for them? Fortunately, there’s Cinergy Health, providing insurance to everybody that wants or needs basic coverage, not just wealthy Americans and those that are in excellent health.
The plan you are referring to costs $241 per month. Granted, there are some attractive features, although there are some limitations of coverage that
could create very large out of pocket expenses for the consumer.
Also…using the example of a healthy 40 year-old male in the Pittsburgh area, the monthly cost for United HealthCare’s best policy (Copay Select) with just
a $2500 major medical deductible, is only $160 per month. Or…almost $1,000 per year less than the Cinergy policy.
In fairness, personally, I do recommend Cinergy plans for uninsurable persons that can not qualify for state plans. Cinergy has a niche, but it’s a
very specific niche.

DO NOT buy this policy! I have been scammed since 04/09 by Cinergy Health! I have been paying my policy monthly via debit card and when I filed a claim in Nov.09 I was denied and they said I didn’t have the proper paperwork sent in for the policy. How was I able to get their card and packet and money withdrawn from my account if the paperwork wasn’t correct?!?! I have filed a complaint with the PA insurance board and also a watchdog group.
PLEASE do not get suckered in!
I always make sure that my family gets Health Insurance from very reputable companies. Health insurance is very important these days.`”
Thanks for information the public about Cinergy Health. Always good to know about the specific options out there and whether they’re good or not.
Interesting Cinergy information. If I’m in good health, UnitedHealthCare might be a good option for me.
Great articles and nice a website design too
Thanks for the Cinergy information. I will be checking out your quotes on Aetna and HealthAmerica.
I had Cinergy and they were not bad.I have Blue Cross now and the coverage is what I want. Fingers crossed.
